Umpqua Bank Commercial Credit Review Team Lead in Walnut Creek, California

JOB PURPOSE

Manages the Credit Review Manager team and establishes commercial credit operational objectives and assignments. Reviews, approves, declines, or recommends commercial credit applications within assigned approval limits while maintaining risk exposure consistent with bank loan quality guidelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for direct supervision, training, mentoring and guidance of a team of Commercial Credit Review Managers, who help to successfully grow revenue by assisting the Commercial Lenders in their prospecting for new business and retaining/expanding existing customer relationships via a balanced growth strategy and assessing each individuals' performance against set goals.

  • Review preflight memos and credit recommendations within a defined scope for accuracy, and approves or declines them within their respective credit approval limits.

  • Collaborates with commercial bankers to develop high quality loan portfolios.

  • Coach bankers in the development of complete, accurate and well-structured credit recommendations, including guidance and advice on financial analyses, loan structuring and other credit skills.

  • Helps maintain commercial credit quality standards and provides strong and consistent credit leadership.

  • Monitors and verifies risk rating accuracy on loans submitted for approval.

  • Advises loan officers on the risk rating process and ensures timely documentation of migrations.

  • Ensures lending staff is aware of all relevant changes in credit requirements.

  • Contributes to the development of credit policies, processes and methodologies.

  • Develops and analyzes financial background data for new or renewed loans. May engage with existing or prospective clients as part of the bank's due diligence and monitoring activities.

  • Demonstrates compliance with all bank regulations for assigned job function and applies to designated job responsibilities -- knowledge may be gained through coursework and on-the-job training. Keeps up to date on regulation changes.

  • Follows all Bank policies and procedures, compliance regulations, and completes all required annual or job-specific training.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of Bank's written policies and procedures regarding Bank Secrecy Act, Regulation CC, Regulation E, Bank Security and other regulations as applicable to this job description.

  • May be asked to coach, mentor, or train others and teach coursework as subject matter expert.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 5+/-

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent.

  • 10+ years of relevant commercial lending and credit experience.

  • 3-5 years of experience as manager/team leader, mentorship role, reviewing others work and providing advice on best practices and compliance, preferred.

  • Experience developing, modifying, and executing company policies that affect immediate operation(s) and company-wide effect.

  • Ability to regularly interact with senior management or executive levels on matters concerning several functional areas, divisions and/or customers.

  • Requires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance of, others in sensitive situations.

  • Excellent relationship management and business development abilities, analytical and problem-solving skills, sales skills, and credit and credit quality skills with prior lending authority experience.

  • Proven track record of success in developing new clients and business, including prospecting, sourcing and networking.

  • Expert knowledge of commercial C&I bank products and services that result in successfully capitalizing on all opportunities to cross-sell the bank's products.

  • Experience managing and developing others and ability to build and maintain relationships.

  • Excellent planning and organization skills with the ability to change course (adaptable) at a moment's notice.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance of, others in sensitive situations.

  • Proficiency with personal computers and related software packages such as Word and Excel, and other business machines.

  • Ability to train and present to small and large audiences or has the interest in learning to train and present.

  • Ability to work under tight timelines, and high volume levels in keeping with established Service Level Agreement for position.
